From Publishers Weekly

Beishir ( Angels at Midnight ) pens a winner with this gripping thriller. Jaime Lynde’s father has been missing for 19 years, and when she learns of his covert career in the OSS and the CIA, she becomes convinced that he is alive and his whereabouts concealed for sinister reasons. The plot elements are familiar: obfuscating CIA operatives; an agent who vanishes into deep cover; an elaborate official cover story; and people who begin to die under mysterious circumstances. But Beishir’s galloping pace revitalizes these standbys, and she confidently builds to a revelatory and spellbinding finale. And in the midst of all the intrigue, a romance develops for Jaime–but the sex is more slow burn than Beishir’s trademark high sizzle, as if Beishir herself was too involved in the moves and countermoves of espionage to concentrate on bedroom dramas.

Better Late Than Never? Not Always….

It’s probably pointless to post this, being the last day of the promotion, but what the heck? Why not?

The Unicorns Daughter eCover

I’ve been preoccupied with family matters (my son and collaborator has been making regular trips to the hospital and orthopedic surgeon–fortunately, the news isn’t nearly as bad as it could have been), so I have a good reason for forgetting to post the latest promo for The Unicorn’s Daughter. If you haven’t read it but would like to, the ebook edition is still available on sale at Amazon until 11:59 Pacific Time tonight.

Even without me tooting my own horn, it’s not doing too badly….

To Prequel or Not to Prequel…That is the Question….

Years ago, when I was just starting to write Chasing the Wind, I got some interesting responses from people in publishing, some of whom I’d known for years. One agent to whom I showed the synopsis told me it was a movie, not a novel. I considered writing it as a screenplay, but as I’ve said before, selling your book to Hollywood is a lot like putting a baby up for adoption. If you ever do see it again, you probably won’t recognize it. Unless you’re J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, Suzanne Collins or a few other top authors, you sign away all control of your work when you sell it to Hollywood. And if you’re a screenwriter, if you want to maintain control of your work, you’d better also be the director.

But I’m getting off track here. It was also suggested that Chasing the Wind should be the second book in the trilogy. One agent told me she thought I should start much earlier in the storyline–go back to the beginning, to the birth of Andrew Stewart; to his troubled young mother, who made a deal with the devil to provide for her child; to the wealthy Brit she married, who had also made a devil’s bargain to save his failing business; to the egomaniacal scientist who carried out illegal experiments in human cloning, whose interest in young Andrew began long before the boy became his protege. And then there was Andrew himself, who, after his mother’s death, was deeply troubled and shut down his emotions in a bid to avoid ever being hurt again. Andrew’s mother dies early on, and Andrew himself is a bit of a jerk as he grows up. So how was I going to make any of these people sympathetic? How could I get readers to care enough to read the story to the end and actually like it?

I’d had this problem with Final Hours. I understood Jamie, the protagonist in that novel, and so did some of the readers, according to the reviews–but they either loved him or hated him.

So the untitled Chasing the Wind prequel has remained on the back burner for years. I’ve revisited it several times, trying to figure out how to make it work–most recently this week, when I discovered there was now a TV version of the Damien Thorn character from The Omen movies. Damien, as anyone who’s seen the movies knows, is most definitely not a sympathetic character.

The Unicorns Daughter eCover

Again, I asked myself if my prequel could work. I mentioned it to my partner in crime, William Kendall, who suggested a prequel to The Unicorn’s Daughter might be a better idea. I gave it some thought. He’s right. There is a story there to tell, and though James Lynde came off as having ice water for blood in the early chapters of that novel, his backstory would make him a sympathetic character. And World War II Europe would definitely make for an interesting backdrop (Judith Krantz’s Mistral’s Daughter, one of my all-time favorite novels, was partially set in that time period in France),

Will I write either prequel? I still have five unfinished projects waiting to be written, so who knows?

And Now, Another Word From Our Sponsor….

Hope that didn’t make you make a quick exit!

Today, I have a special promotion for The Unicorn’s Daughter. The Kindle edition is available now through March 6th for $.99. And I’ve just posted an excerpt of the first draft of the sequel, The Ides of March, at Write On by Kindle, if you’re interested in seeing what Jaime’s been up to since 1986….

Ides 2

First, Second and Third Signs of the Apocalypse?

Something major happened yesterday, though most of you aren’t aware of it: a manuscript was completed and two new covers began to take form.

Not a big deal, you say? Happens every day? Sure…but not for me. I can admit it now–I hadn’t finished a book since 2009, and wasn’t sure I ever would again. Though I don’t have grand mal seizures, what I do have has been enough of a headache (literally) to make me wonder if I’d ever publish another book. I could get started, sure–but nothing ever got finished. My brain just wouldn’t cooperate for very long. On the good days, I could write a grocery list if it wasn’t a long one. I might be able to churn out a short letter or write a blog post or do Facebook posts…but nothing that required any serious degree of thought. It just wasn’t there. My muse, like Elvis, had left the building.

I’ve been praying a lot. I knew God could fix me, and if He didn’t, it would be because this wasn’t the route He wanted me to take. I struggled. Then, yesterday, a miracle happened (at least it was a miracle to me). I realized I was really, really close to completing Sam’s Story and at least halfway through Riding Out the Storm. I had outlined three books in the Unicorn’s Daughter series and had a good grip on Superhero in Training. How had this happened without me realizing it?

I was so close, no way was I going to stop now. I put everything else aside and kept writing until I made it to that last page of Sam’s Story. Okay, there was a little bit of cheating involved there–the last scene was written months ago. I write like I’m assembling a patchwork quilt. I do it in pieces, and not always in order. Anyway, I was finished! Sure, there’s a good degree of fine-tuning to be done, but I finished an entire manuscript!

Then I realized I needed covers and I needed them pronto. I want to post the first few chapters of the second Unicorn’s Daughter book and Superhero in Training at Wattpad to (hopefully) generate reader interest. Getting Collin to do that was going to take some major nagging. He once wanted to start a business in creating covers and advertising materials for authors, and he got off to a great start. He was even a semi-finalist in a cover design contest. The problem is that most indie authors can’t afford a professional cover artist, and he couldn’t do it for free. He’d spent a lot of money on the programs and tools he uses to create those covers, and it’s also time consuming. He still does my covers, of course, but his heart’s not in it anymore. He has to be pushed.

I pushed. And the result? They, like my manuscript, still need some tweaking, but here they are!

Back Cover Blurb:

She is her father’s daughter.

Living up to a legend isn’t easy. Sometimes, it’s impossible. Jaime Lynde rejected all attempts to recruit her to fill her late father’s spy shoes–until 9/11. Realizing the world was now at war with an enemy who fought not on the battlefield, but in our own backyards, on our own streets, she joined the fight–even though the personal cost would be the one thing that mattered most to her. Finally, she understands the sacrifice her father had made so many years ago….

As a rookie intelligence operative, she makes a startling discovery in a chance conversation with a longtime colleague. Is it possible someone within our own government is plotting to kill the President of the United States?

Back Cover Blurb:

Charlie’s a talented artist running a comic book store–and running away from her troubled past….

Will is about to get his PhD in psychology but secretly wants to be a comic book writer–if he can find an artist….

And then there’s Tuffy….

Tuffy’s a pitbull with a drinking problem. Most weekends, he ends up sleeping it off at the local pound–but when his human is killed by a mugger, he becomes the unlikely sidekick of a mysterious vigilante who’s come to watch over the quirky residents of the small Midwestern college town….

If only AA would accept him, maybe Tuffy could clean up his act….
And then there’s Sam’s Story–the finished manuscript. The book could be available as early as Christmas. We’ll see. That would be nice, but I’m not rushing it. Better to do it right than to do it fast….

Back Cover Blurb:

Hi–my name is Sam. This is my story. Not that the title doesn’t make that obvious.

Actually, there are two of us. The first Sam came to my rescue when, alone and frightened in a pet shop, I didn’t know where I was going or if I’d be happy and cared for when I got there. He’s been my spirit guide through good times and bad in my twenty-one years in this world, after leading me to my human family. Well, some of them are human. One is a potbellied pig with an attitude. Two are dogs, one a bit of a curmudgeon, the other good-hearted but not always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are rabbits–four in all.

I’m telling my story in the hope that it will help you humans out there understand how we–birds, dogs, cats, pigs, and other critters–think feel and love. Mostly, I want to make those of you who think we’re disposable to think twice before abandoning us or leaving us at shelters where we will almost certainly die alone and sad. We feel, we love, just like you do. We want to be part of your family….

So…what do y’all think?

Making a Course Correction (Again)

For the past several months, I’ve been working on two projects outside the realm of my writing experience. One is my memoir, focusing on the darkest period in my life–a riches to rags account of my journey from bestselling author to homelessness and back. The other is a memoir of sorts of my parakeet, Sam, and his observations on life and living with humans. Though I plan to publish both as books, I’ve decided to test the waters first. Reader reviews on Amazon can be brutal, and I must confess that I don’t have the requisite writers’ thick skin with regard to these two projects that I’ve developed with my novels.

What to do? After giving it some thought, I’ve decided to launch both as blogs, posting a couple of chapters per week. If reader response is positive, then they’ll also be published as books via Amazon.

As for my novels, I’ve found that The Unicorn’s Daughter is far and away my best seller, selling more than twice as many books as all of my other novels combined. Even a recent free ebook promotion that included four of my novels yielded similar results worldwide.

For some time now, I’ve been looking for an idea that would provide me with the opportunity to write the type of books Janet Evanovich writes: novels full of action and humor, with protagonists who can carry a series…and I think I’ve finally found them.

I’ve already developed plots for two novels focusing on Jaime from The Unicorn’s Daughter and Darcy from Chasing the Wind–both divorced photojournalists, one a spy as well–using stories taken from today’s headlines.

This should be fun….

Here are the links to the new  blogs. They’re at WordPress, and comments are welcome!

My Memoir

Sam’s Story

Now Let’s See…Where Did They Leave Off?

Looks like there’s going to be a sequel to The Unicorn’s Daughter!

I’d been playing around with the possibility for a while now. I’d even come up with a plot and wrote a few chapters. I teamed her with Darcy from Chasing the Wind. The only thing I didn’t have was a title. But I really wasn’t sure I’d go ahead with it until, after months of not checking in on my product pages at Amazon, I decided to see if there was anything new. These are the latest of twenty-one reviews there….

Just when I thought I knew how the storyline was progressing, there was a new twist. The author is a great mystery writer. I found the book hard to put down.

Very interesting to read. Never the type of book I would have normally picked up. Kept me guessing til the very end.

Now, I’m about to publish a memoir, as well as the “memoir” of my parakeet, Sam, which were to be followed by some romantic comedies. The Chasing the Wind sequel, An Army of Angels, along with this sequel, were on indefinite hold. But now that I see these reviews….

And speaking of reviews, be sure you check out William’s review of The Untouchables over at his blog, as well as the latest from his photoblog, Eve’s poem about talent  and Grace’s photos of Baba Yaga houses….

So much for making that February 17th deadline. But I should have it ready to go by the end of February. In the meantime, my friend, fellow blogger and author Hilary Grosman is having another great book giveaway for Valentine’s Day, and I’m participating again. Be sure you check out the contest at her blog, Feeling Beachie. If you see anything you like, my book included, be sure to enter!

Book Name: DANGLED CARAT Author Name: HILARY GROSSMAN #pages: 281

goodreads Hilary had gotten used to dating the commitment-phobic Marc. They had a great relationship—why rush into things? But after four years together, their friends decided to take matters into their own hands, pushing Marc to propose. Unfortunately, Marc still wasn’t ready—and their friends’ meddling in the form of a faux engagement party led to a disastrous New Year’s Eve that brought their relationship to a turning point. In this relatable, playful memoir, Hilary reminisces about her life before Marc—from the awkward teenage years to her early relationships and, finally, to the day she met Marc and realized that she really wanted to see him again. Through the ease of their early time together up until that fateful New Year’s Eve, Hilary shares the details and considers how Marc’s inability to commit led her to find an inner strength and confidence she didn’t know she possessed. For anyone who has ever dated a commitment-phobe, who has found their patience wearing thin, or who has sat around wondering if he is ever going to pop the question while trying to remain the picture of patience and grace, Hilary’s humorous and honest story will hit home. With the arrival of Jared Moody, the new hire at work, Julia’s mundane life is suddenly turned upside down. Her instant (and totally ridiculous) crush on the new guy causes Julia to finally make some long-overdue changes, in hopes to find a life that includes more than baking and hanging out with Charlie.
But when the biggest and most unexpected change comes, will the new and improved Julia be able to overcome it? Or will she go back to her spinster ways?

RED ALERT: Bragging Mom On The Loose!

I get to show a bit of motherly pride today! It’s a bit after the fact, but my super-talented son Collin  (who does ALL of my covers) has had two of his cover designs make the semi-finals of the Authors Database 2013 Book Cover Contest! One of them is the cover for my re-released novel The Unicorn’s Daughter. The other is the cover he designed for my friend and fellow author Eve Gaal’s delightful romance, Penniless Hearts.
